How to Use the Eye Chart

  1. Print out our free eye chart on regular A4-sized paper (8 1/2 x 11 inch).
  2. At eye level, attach the chart to a windowless wall in a well-lit room.
  3. Measure and stand ten feet from the wall.
  4. Cover one eye. If you wear glasses, keep them on during the test.
  5. Have another person point to each line as you read the letters out loud. Start with the top row and keep track of which letters you get right.
  6. Continue to the bottom row or until you can no longer read the letters.
  7. Record your results for each eye by writing down the number of the smallest line where you correctly identified majority of the letters. For example, if you were able to read 5 out of 8 letters on line 7, write 20/20.
  8. Cover your other eye and repeat steps 5 to 7.

So, what do your results mean?

Depending on your age, your results could indicate the quality of vision you have. 3 to 4-year-olds should be able to read the 20/40 line, 5-year-olds, the 20/30 line and those older should be able to read to at least the 20/20 line.

If you didn’t achieve these results, it could mean you require glasses so be sure to schedule an eye exam to ensure healthy eyes!
